“Leaving!” Arden yelled.

“Dammit!” Erik said between his clenched teeth.

Dorian let out a long sigh next to me. “My stuff was still in the boat.”

“It’s okay,” I said, jerky my thumb over my shoulder. “Still got mine.”

“Erik’s going to be pissed. I don’t even know how I did that,” Dorian said. “They had their stuff in there. I didn’t know if we’d be staying here.”

I placed my hand on his shoulder. “It’s okay. It was just a mistake. Anyone could have done it.”

“Anyone didn’t do it. I did. And mistakes can get people killed,” Dorian said, turning from me. He slowly walked down the beach.

“What’s wrong with him?” Erik asked when Dorian was out of earshot.

My eyebrows dropped. “He left his stuff on the boat.”

“Shit,” Erik whispered.

“He thinks you’ll be pissed.”

“I am,” Erik said. “But more pissed at them for leaving.”

I pressed my hand over my face. “That’s my fault. I shouldn’t have invited them. They seemed nice and normal.”

“We can’t trust anyone,” Erik said.

“There are other people like us out there,” I said.

“Of course, there are, but there are probably more shitty people right now,” Erik said. “People are still scared. It’s still every man for himself.”

I rubbed my hands up and down my prickled arms. Erik wrapped his arm around me as we walked toward Dorian.

“Will people ever not be scared?” I asked.

“Sure, at some point,” Erik said.

“When?” I questioned with a hefty groan.

Erik chuckled. “Probably years.”

“Great.”

Dorian threw his hand in the air. “I know, I screwed up.”

“Would you please lower your voice?” Erik hissed.

Dorian turned and whispered, “Sorry! It’s better if we part ways. I’m such a disappointment.”

“Dorian!” I said, jogging to catch up with him. “He’s not your dad. And neither of us think you’re a screw-up or a disappointment.”

“Hey, man, shit happens,” Erik said.

Dorian stopped. His eyes locked with mine for a long moment before shifting to Erik’s. He dragged his fingers through his hair.

“Sorry, guys,” Dorian said.

“No worries,” Erik said, cocking his head to the side. “Let’s go in there.”

His head indicated a small boathouse connected to a nearby dock. It was better than sitting out in the open, unable to sleep until morning.

A small amount of moonlight seeped in through cracks and bounced off the water that held a rocking boat. It was enough to give the building a soft, pale blue glow.

I sat down on the bench, stretching my legs out in front of me while I rubbed the back of my neck. I must have been tensing every muscle in my body.

There were fishing poles displayed on the wall and dirty buckets scattered on the floor. I could hear the water rushing underneath us. It smelled of rotten fish, wet earth, and worms.

Erik took off his backpack and set it down on the floor. He covered a yawn as he sat down next to the pack.

“You okay?” Erik asked, his eyes glowing. He laid down, using his backpack for a pillow.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” I said.

“Sure?” he asked.

I pressed my lips together. “I’m as fine as a person can be after having been just held at gunpoint.
